I watched the movie ‘Father of the Bride’ yesterday night & I couldn’t resist writing about it.
‘Father of the Bride’ is about a father narrating the story of how his darling daughter grows up, marries and leaves to make a new home. Now you might think “what’s so new about that? It happens in almost every household.” But the way the story is narrated and the whole movie is filmed gives such a cozy and warm feeling while watching the movie.
The story is a normal every-day one – Anne announces her engagement to Brian MacKenzie during a dinner with her parents, George & Nina Banks (Steve Martin & Diane Keaton) are actually shocked but try to accept it with elegance. Then comes ‘meet the would be in laws’ where the Banks meet the MacKenzies, followed by ‘meet the wedding coordinator’ where Franc and his assistant Wang are introduced.
As the wedding preparations begin, George struggles very hard to come to terms with parting with his daughter Anne, and also does manage to say or do the wrong thing that almost stops the progress of the wedding. He does resolve with his to be son-in-law in the end, and the wedding is soon over with Anne getting the perfect fairy-tale wedding and leaving for her honeymoon.
The story is about a father’s fear at losing his daughter or rather giving her away to a complete stranger, and George Bank’s dialogue “You initially fear your daughter meeting the wrong guy and as years pass by and she graduates, you fear her meeting the right guy” (it was along these lines for sure!) is quite touching. Comic relief comes in the form of the wedding preps and George’s mounting tension as he tries to keep the costs under control. On the whole, it’s a must watch.
